Biography

Birth, Childhood, Ohio

Moses Van Winkle was born in Ohio in about 1810, most likely in Muskingum County.[2] He was the son of Moses Van Winkle and Elizabeth Tyler.[2]

1818: Fallsbury Township, Licking County, Ohio (about 40 miles northeast of Columbus) was settled in 1818. “David Bright was the first settler, building his cabin, in 1818… The settlers that immediately succeeded Bright [though when is unclear] were Hezekiah Blount, William Wilson, [the brothers of Moses] Paul, William and James Van Winkle. … A very early school-house, and probably the first in the township, was erected in the Van Winkle settlement, not far from the village of Fallsbury.”[3]

In 1820, Moses resided in Perry Township, Licking County, Ohio, with his father, his step-mother, his sister, Eliza, and his half-sister, Julia Ann.[4] Living immediately next door were the families of his elder brothers, Paul,[5] James[6] and William.[7] Also in 1820, his father purchased 135 acres of land in Fallsbury Township, immediately to the north of Perry Township.[8] Moses's father in 1825 bought another 270 acres of land in Fallsbury Township, and most of the over 400 acres he acquired in 1820-1825 has been owned continuously by the family since.[8] His father in 1830 lived in Fallsbury Township with his second wife and their five children.[8] As for Moses, his whereabouts in 1830 are unclear, though he likely remained in Licking County.

Marriage, Children, Ohio

Moses married Susan Baughman, also of Fallbury Township, in about 1833.[9] They had twelve children together. Their first, Eliza, was born 10 Aug 1834, in Fallsbury Township.[10] In 1835, Moses bought 40 acres of land there, in his own name,[11] land he may have owned until 1847,[12] and which appeared to remain in the Van Winkle family until at least 1875.[13] Moses's brother, James, bought 80 acres in Fallsbury Township in 1835, too,[6] and his father bought another 34 acres in Fallsbury that year.[8] Moses and Susan thereafter had their second, third and fourth children, all in Fallsbury Township: Mary, in about 1836.[14] Perry, 24 May 1838,[15] and Melinda, by 1840.[16] In 1840, they resided in Fallsbury Township with Eliza, Mary, Perry and Malinda.[17] Also residing in Fallsbury Township in 1840 were Moses's step-mother and his five step-siblings, [18] Moses's brothers, Paul (heading a family of nine)[5] and William (family of thirteen),[7] and Moses's brothers-in-law, Christian Baughman (heading a family of eight),[19] George Baughman (family of ten),[20] John Baughman (family of four),[21] and William Baughman (family of seven),[22]

Moses and Susan remained in Fallsbury Township, where they next had their fifth, sixth and seventh children: James, born about 1842,[23] Mahala, born about 1843,[24] and Isiah, born 4 Mar 1845.[25]

Relocation to Wisconsin

The precise date isn't known, but by no later than 1 Jan 1847, when their eighth child, Henry, was born,[26] Moses and Susan were residing somewhere in Wisconsin, likely in Green County, where Susan's brother, John, was living at the time.[21] What about her brother, George? Also there at the time?

Relocation to Iowa

They didn't remain in Wisconsin long. Sometime in 1847, after Henry's birth, Moses and Susan moved to Iowa.[27] It appears their first stop was in Henry County, Iowa, where, 1 Feb 1848, Moses bought 40 acres of land in Trenton Township, northwest of Mount Pleasant, the county seat.[28] In Henry County, 6 May 1849, their son, William, was born.[29] As of 10 Sep 1850, Moses and Susan resided in Henry County, in Jefferson Township (about 10 miles or so northwest of Mount Pleasant, the county seat), on a $400 farm they owned, with their children, Eliza, Mary, Perry, Melinda (aka Lucinda), James, Mahala, Isaiah, Henry and William.[30] Residing immediately next door in 1850, and also farming, without wife or children, was Moses's elder brother, James Van Winkle.[6]

In 1852, Moses and Susan continued to reside in Jefferson Township with their children, Eliza, Mary, Perry, Melinda, James, Mahala, Isiah, Henry and William.[31] Living immediately next door was his brother-in-law, Christian Baughman, heading a family of eight.[19] Moses’s elder brother, William, who had remained in Fallsbury Township, Ohio, died there in 1852.[7] Moses and Susan then had their tenth child, Lucinda Isabelle Van Winkle, 6 Apr 1852, in Jefferson Township.[32] Shortly after that, their children began to marry in Henry County. Eliza wed widower Thomas Ross, 22 Feb 1853.[10] Mary married Harvey Robinson, 22 Jan 1854.[14] That year, too, Moses and Susan had their eleventh child, Irwin,[33] in Jefferson Township.[34] Still residing in Jefferson Township that year was Susan's brother, Christian Baughman, and his family of eight.[19]

By 1856, Moses and Susan had moved to Oregon Township, in Washington County, Iowa, about 23 miles north of Mount Pleasant.[35] There, presumably, they had their twelfth and final child together, Alice, 20 Jun 1856.[36]

Death of Wife and Son

Moses and Susan's daughter, Melinda, married Jonathan Geddes in Henry County, 30 Dec 1857,[16] but it's unclear if Susan was alive to witness the wedding. Sometime after the birth of their daughter, Alice, in 1856, and 15 Aug 1860, when a census failed to list her, both Susan and thier son, Irwin, died, presumably in Oregon Township. Moses in 1860 continued to reside in Oregon Township with eight of his surviving children (Perry, James, Mahala, Isiah, Henry, William, Lucinda and Alice), as well as with the family of his married daughter, Melinda.[37]

Remarriage, More Children

The widower Moses remarried, taking as his second wife, Clarissa Mayhew, in Washington County, 16 Aug 1861.[38] More of his children married. Mahala wed John Frederick in Washington County, Iowa (presumably in Oregon Township), 1 May 1862.[24] Perry married Martha Ellen Olds in Washington County, 4 Jul 1866.[15] James married Maria Gray in Washington County, Iowa, 14 Aug 1866.[23] Isiah married Marinda Ellen Blackman in Wapello County, Iowa, 13 Nov 1866.[25]

As of 16 Aug 1870, Moses continued to live in Oregon Township with his second wife, his children by his first marriage, William and Alice, and two children by his second marriage, next door to his son, Perry, and his son's wife.[39] The map below, published in 1874,[40] identifies his parcel and, in particular, in relationship to Ainsworth.

Moses's daughter, Alice, at age 21, and by then a resident of Ellisville, Fulton County, Illinois, married, in Knox County, Illinois, 30 Jun 1877, Burris M. Edwards, also of Ellisville.[36] As of Jun 23 1880, Moses and his second wife are listed as residents of Ainsworth, living with his son by his first marriage, William, who was "teaching school," and four children by his second marriage.[41]

Final Years, Death

Moses son, James, died in Iowa in 1880, at about age 38.[23] Sometime between then and 1885, his second wife, Clarissa, also died, probably in Washington County, though precisely when, where or how isn't known.[42] Moses resided with his last four children, Laura, Lovina, Jennie and Frank, somewhere on "Block 11" of Washington Street, in Ainsworth, without her, in 1885.[43]

Moses's daughter, Jennie, married Clarence Young in Washington County, 26 Mar 1892.

At age 25, his daughter, Laura, married George W. Wiley in Washington County, 10 Nov 1892.

Some say, without citation to specific evidence, that Moses died in Eldon, Wapello County, Iowa, 18 Oct 1895, at age 85.[44] The same source opines he was buried in Ainsworth, though, again, the evidence for that remains unknown.[44] If he did die in 1895, he was survived by at least twelve of his sixteen children (listed here in order of their deaths): Eliza, who died in London Mills, Illinois, 15 Jul 1911, at age 76,[10] Isiah, who died in Clearfield, Iowa, 10 Sep 1915, at age 70,[25] Mary, who died after Isiah (though when and where isn't known),[14] Perry, who died in Washington County, Iowa, 27 May 1918, at age 80,[15] Henry, who died in Des Moines, Iowa, 29 May 1931, at age 84,[26] Alice, who died in Peoria County, Illinois, 16 Jan 1933, at age 76,[36] William, who died in Tuskeego, Decatur County, Iowa, 19 Mar 1935, at age 85,[29] and Lucinda, who died in Webster City, Iowa, Mar 1950, at age 97.[32]

UNKNOWN: Mahala ADD: Four kids by second marriage.

  2. 2.0 2.1 There's no known birth record for Moses. His connection to his parents is extrapolated from the fact that he is named "Moses" and from the fact Moses Van Winkle and Elizabeth Tyler were in the vicinity of Muskingum County at the time, but the primary source is 1913 Biographical Excerpts: "Moses," who married "Susan Baughman," was the son of "Moses Van Winkle" and "Tyler." As for the date of his birth. some have said he was born, specifically, 11 Jun 1810, but the basis for that assertion isn't known. The year used in this profile is based on the sources below. Possible birth ranges are shown by plugging in census dates and ages into an online calculatorhere, and, collectively, the census data suggests Moses was born 9/11/1809-6/23/1810, putting a slightly higher probability of 1810.
